Zora Memorialized In-Person

Zora Neale Hurston (1901-1960) is recognized as one of America’s finest twentieth century writers. Her books have inspired countless devotees to trek to Hurston sites seeking connection and inspiration—and has led to the author’s memorialization by communities capitalizing on her celebrity. This presentation will investigate Hurston’s legacy by looking at three Florida cities—Eatonville, St. Augustine, and Fort Pierce—that have made special efforts to keep Hurston’s memory alive.

Leslie Kemp Poole is associate professor of environmental studies at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida. A fourth-generation Floridian, Poole’s work focuses on Florida’s environment. This talk is inspired by a chapter she is writing for a book about Hurston.
